The expansion of digital technologies and the capabilities offered by Web.2.0 for political and civic participation have raised the question of a digital divide, leading to new kinds of social and educational inequalities. Digital technologies present formal and non-formal citizenship education with new challenges.

The workshop considered potential and experiences by means of brief expert talks and the presentation of good practice models.

Workshop 1: School and Quality Assurance – Is citizenship education a tool for change of the Roma children's situation?


Arthur Ivatts (British Department for Children, Schools and Families) and Calin Rus (Intercultural Institute Timisoara) thoroughly investigated the problems which Roma children are facing in Romanian and British societies. Both of speakers put forward certain solutions. Calin Rus described program based on Quality Assurance. Whereas Arthur Ivatts was speaking about UK educational system and claimed that it fails to deal with problem of poor school performance of Roma and their absence on higher levels of education.

Open forum - impressions from the dark green, yellow, and lila room


Different rooms, different colors, different ideas and opinions - the second day of the conference begun with the Open Forum. In the Theatre Hall one of the theme groups was struggling to point the challenges of Citizenship Education. Discussion started with experience of Czech Republic.

Opening panel - Barbara Malak-Minkiewicz (IEA)


"I am worried about the 'alienated youth'", says Barbara Malak-Minkiewicz, "young people who don't have ideas, neather knowlegde nor an opinion. This concerns me. Democracy would be better off if we created a system of education where the educationally priviledged would care about the deprived, and where those who are on the verge of dropping out from school would learn how to be active participants and express their opinion."
